PROGRAM DETAILS

In honor of our dear friend and fellow fighter, Bill Wilson, Jax Hope Inc is proud to offer the Bill Wilson's Parkinson's Resource Program. The mission of this program is to provide resources to those living with Parkinson's Disease in the First Coast Region of Florida. Through this program we hope to increase the quality of life for those with the disease and their families. Additionally, our goal is to extend our reach and provide resources to  the under-served and under-privileged and to create opportunities to participate in research.

This program currently provides:

  1. Resource packets for those new to the area or newly diagnosed, or anyone needing additional information. The resource packets identify local exercise programs, support groups, therapies, and community events. Connections and resources to address legal, financial, and medical planning tips are included as well as home safety resources, support, and equipment information.

  2. The First Coast Parkinson’s Newsletter will continue within this program and be a part of the resource packet as well. Subscribe to Jax Hope Inc and you will receive it quarterly.

In addition, Jax Hope Inc is raising funds to fulfill Bill Wilson's dream of a  Jacksonville Parkinson's Center where those with PD can access support services, educational opportunities, and exercise programs. The goal is to have multiple locations across the First Coast Region which will host support group meetings, exercise and educational classes, serve as a central point for resources, and ultimately be a beacon of hope for the community.

BILL'S LEGACY

William “Bill” Joe Wilson, passed away after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease October 16, 2020.  The Bill Wilson’s Parkinson’s Resource Program is an effort to realize his vision to create a central resource for information, support and coordination for the collective Parkinson’s family of patients and their families.

Bill lived a life of service and was a passionate individual.  He served his country in the Armed Services, earned a PhD in statistics from Texas A&M, and dedicated 30 years of service to the University of North Florida where he was ultimately recognized by the prestigious Distinguished Professor Award based on his accomplishments in the areas of teaching, research, publication and professional service.  He also served University of North Florida (UNF) as Associate Vice-President in Academic Affairs.  However, shortly after retirement, Bill was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2006  – and it ignited a new passion.   He applied for and became a Parkinson’s Foundation Advocate.  This inspired him to create the First Coast Parkinson’s Disease Newsletter and website, listing local support groups, exercise programs, events and education articles.  He spoke to numerous Parkinson’s groups advocating for participation in clinical trials and convened a roundtable seminar of 10 health providers (neurologist and therapist) and 100 participants to facilitate information dissemination.  He was recognized by the Davis Phinney Foundation as a “local hero” in 2014 and upon his passage in 2020, donated his brain to Mayo Clinic for research.

Bill was the model of courage and determination in meeting the challenges of Parkinson’s Disease while enjoying a full life.  Bill once wrote:

“Parkinson’s is a relentless fighter who never slows down.  It is hard to keep from allowing it to guide your life.  But it can be done.  Resist the temptation to stay in bed, resist the temptation to avoid exercise class because it is raining, and resist all the other things that Parkinson’s throws at you.”
